WORD FOR TODAY

If youre like many Christians, you have probably started out on January 1 committing to read through the entire Bible in a year, only to give up in March because you were behind or got bogged down in Leviticus. Although reading through the Bible each year is ideal, it is an elusive goal. That’s where this three-year Bible reading program can be effective.

The largest portion of the Bible, the Old Testament, makes up 75% of the entire book. Less than 13% of the Scripture’s primary interpretation is directed to the New Testament believers of the Church Age, found primarily in the New Testament Letters. Certainly all Scripture is profitable for the New Testament believer (2 Timothy 3:16) and all Scripture should be read, studied, and understood by believers today.

This three-year Bible reading program emphasizes the passages which are foundational to the believer’s walk in the world and worship in the Body of Christ—all the while recognizing that the entire Bible complements these New Testament truths. At its very inception the Church focused on the “apostles’ teaching” (Acts 2:42).

Tipically, the daily reading assigment will be a blend of selected chapters from the Old Testament, Psalms and Proverbs, the Gospels and Acts, with an added focus on the New Testament Letters. Following this schedule over a three-year period, reading four chapters per day, you will have read through the Old Testament, Psalms and Proverbs six times, the Gospels and Acts six times and the New Testament Letters twelve times. By reading straight through the Bible each year, you will have read 1,189 chapters. Following this schedule, you will have read 1,456 chapters per year.

God instructs Christians to feed daily on the Word of God (1 Peter 2:2; 1 Timothy 4:13;5:17; Job 23:12; Psalm 119:97,147-148; Acts 6:4). Yet it does not specifically say how much of God’s Word is to be read in a given period or at what rate is to be read. It is better for a believer to read through the Bible in three years than to experience irregular reading of God’s Word between slumps of discouragment.

It is my hope and prayer that this three-year Bible reading program will help you develop disciplined reading habits that you will use for the rest of your life. The more we give ourselves to reading God’s Word, the more we will desire it and consistently set aside time to feed spiritually from its pages. May we grow ever closer to the Father as we read, learn, and apply His Word.
